Basket Case guitar song sheet
Sources & musical analysis

Green Day — Basket Case, Dookie (1994); standard-tuning adaptation in E, retaining familiar fret positions.

Core harmonic sections with explicitly simplified rhythm and voicings.

Research record Retrospective reconstruction

Reconstructed from the saved song JSON, source list and earlier verification notes. The principal teaching articles were reopened and compared during this backfill. Remaining references retain their earlier scope, identified below; no new recording audition or complete tab audit was performed. Harmonic labels and practice choices below are explicit derivations from the displayed edition, with simplifications preserved rather than silently presented as studio facts. Claim-level evidence and fidelity records were added retrospectively from retained summaries; missing precise source locations are explicitly identified, and no claims were upgraded to supported.

Recording independently checked: No.

Claim-level evidence

Song · key inferred

E major is the selected tonal frame; The teaching sources describe half-step-down tuning for the recorded guitar. This user-requested edition keeps the familiar E-family fret shapes in standard EADGBE, so its sounding tonal frame is E major, a semitone above the recording. This transposition is our derivation, not a claim that the sources use standard tuning.

Key & tuning Harmonic interpretation

The teaching sources describe half-step-down tuning for the recorded guitar. This user-requested edition keeps the familiar E-family fret shapes in standard EADGBE, so its sounding tonal frame is E major, a semitone above the recording. This transposition is our derivation, not a claim that the sources use standard tuning. [1] [3]

Chord functions

E5 I

E–B is root plus fifth on scale degree 1: I. The major tonal frame comes from the broader progression; this voicing itself contains no G♯ third. [1]

Harmonic interpretation
B5 V

B–F♯ is root plus fifth on degree 5: V. Its return to E5 supports a dominant-to-tonic reading without a sounded major third. [1]

Harmonic interpretation
C#5 vi (5)

C♯–G♯ places the power chord on degree 6. vi (5) describes the contextual C♯-minor family in E major while explicitly preserving a fifth-only voicing; no E third is sounded. [1]

Harmonic interpretation
G#5 iii (5)

G♯–D♯ places the power chord on degree 3. iii (5) is contextual minor-family notation, not a claim that a B third is played. [1]

Harmonic interpretation
A5 IV

A–E is root plus fifth on degree 4: IV. A belongs to the E-major scale but not its five-note major pentatonic subset. [1]

Harmonic interpretation
D5 ♭VII

D–A gives a lowered degree-7 root relative to E major’s D♯: ♭VII. Treat it as a local non-diatonic color. Target D or A here instead of sustaining D♯ from the global major scale. [1]

Harmonic interpretation

Meter, duration & feel Harmonic interpretation

Four quarter-note units make each bar; the featured study uses regular eighth-note attacks. The earlier normalization retains an eight-bar verse, fourteen-bar chorus, two-bar interlude and four-bar bridge/outro selections, including a half-bar E5/D5 change. The ~170 quarter-note BPM value follows the earlier visual Songsterr check; other retained estimates differ. Exact syncopation, rests and the ending tag are simplified, not verified against audio in this backfill. [1] [3]

Choosing material for a looper Playing suggestion

Repeated verse harmony supplies a predictable complete cycle; retain both final B5 bars. The fourteen-bar chorus is a different-length cycle, so it should not be assumed to align indefinitely with an eight-bar verse layer. Use compatible fragments or matched full cycles when combining layers, within two simultaneous tracks. Root/fifth parts leave room for live melody; this sheet does not reconstruct every full-band layer. The outro is marked as a cycle because its displayed four-bar selection repeats four times; the bridge is marked as a one-time transition. [1] [3]

Improvisation choices Playing suggestion

E major pentatonic (E F♯ G♯ B C♯) offers a starting pool; E major adds A and D♯. Land on the current power chord’s root or fifth, then develop short rhythmic motifs. D5 is the exception: use D or A and resolve toward C♯5 rather than holding D♯. G natural from E minor pentatonic introduces deliberate tension against G♯, so the minor box is not an automatic fit. These suggestions follow the adapted harmony, not a transcribed solo. [1] [3]

Cross-checks & arrangement decisions

Written E-family shapes versus sounding E-flat. The linked tab uses half-step-down tuning. At the user’s request retain the same fret positions in standard EADGBE: sounding key becomes E major, one semitone above the recording. [1] [2] [3] [6]

Eight-bar verse and fourteen-bar chorus. Keep the final two B5 verse bars and half-bar E5/D5 chorus change. Do not pad the chorus to sixteen bars. [1] [2]

Power-chord simplification. Use fifth-only shapes throughout; note that later studio verses introduce full triads. [1] [2]

Featured rhythm, interlude and outro. The tab demonstrates continuous eighths, not every recorded accent. Interlude onsets are regularized. Outro is a harmonic skeleton without upper-voice embellishments or final tag. [1] [2]

Tempo. Use approximately 170 quarter-note BPM to follow the opening tempo in the user-linked Songsterr revision. Previous sources estimated 174–176; this is a practice-sheet reference, not a recording tempo analysis. [4] [5] [6]

Limits of this edition

  • Recording was not independently auditioned in this session.
  • Exact syncopation, later triads, breaks and the outro final tag are simplified or omitted.
  • This is a compact harmonic playground, not a complete transcription.
  • Songsterr opening tuning, shapes and tempo were visually inspected; this sheet does not reproduce its exact attacks, open-string transitions or full transcription.
  • Additional tips are authored improvisation suggestions derived from the displayed harmony, not claims about the artist’s recorded solo choices.
